Monitoring You in Pregnancy and Labor
All birth locations and providers should monitor your basic indexes of health. It’s typical for both midwives and doctors to check your blood pressure during prenatal visits and periodically during labor. Additionally, it’s common to monitor your temperature during labor and often also your pulse and the oxygen levels in your blood. Checking your urine and blood is also common during pregnancy and in labor, and toward the end of pregnancy you’ll also be checked for something called group beta strep (GBS). During pregnancy and labor, there will be increased activity to manage your baby’s well-being. Below, I detail the ways you’ll likely be monitored and checked to help you understand what to expect, why they’re doing it, and what the results of the tests might mean.
